Monash Citerium
Tuesday 27th March, 2012
Due to daylight saving finishing this was the last Criterium for this season. The turn out was reasonable but unfortunate that some of the regulars were missing. This format is the favorite of all the clubs formats so we look forward to Criterium racing starting next October.

Only
Lee Stevens, Shane Pitt and
Chris Gartery took part in the
A grade race that was shortened to 15 minutes.
Stevens and
Gartery rode hard, averaging 38 kph but ensured that recently promoted
Pitt was able to keep with them. The group rotated well together until the final sprint when it became a race of two.
Stevens and
Gartery took part in a straight line drag for the finish with Stevens taking the victory by only centimetres over Gartery.
B grade was the largest group of the night with
Ruth Strout and
Peter Weston combining with
Lee Rasheed, Glen O Brien, Adrian Pipe and
Heath Pillen for the 35 minute event. The group rode at a consistent pace with all riders taking turns. There was a burst of excitement at the 20 minute mark when
Rasheed attempted a solo breakaway, but cool heads in the chasing group chose to wait for him to tire in the wind before reeling him back in.In an unexpected turn of events only 10 minutes before the end of the race, hot favourite
Pillen's race ended with the sound of air escaping from his tire and a slow trudge back to the start line.In the final lap
Rasheed was forced to the front.Up the back straight
Weston made a break for it closely followed by
Pipe.At the final corner
Pipe rounded first closely followed by
Rasheed and
O Brien. It all went pear shaped for
Pipe as his front wheel skipped on some gravel and sent him into the dirt on the side of the road usually reserved for mountain bikers. He did stay upright and recovered to claim third but
Rasheed and
O Brien bolted away for the line.In the final sprint Rasheed led out with
O Brien breaking late for the line resulting in a draw as neither rider was able to determine who hit the line first.
Strout came across the line for fourth with
Weston fifth.
C Grade saw new young rider
Gordon Pipe demonstrate cycling skills beyond his years as he rode with
Gordon Lawton, Angelo Ylia and
John Eshman. The group rode well together with all riders taking solid turns at the front as the pace slowly increased without
Pipe showing any sign of discomfort.
Eshman livened up the race by racing away up the hill at the half way mark, but all riders including
Pipe were able to chase him down and bring him back into the fold.At the final sprint
Pipe, under the guidance of
Lawton, held off his sprint until the final corner when he jumped out of the pack and headed to the line
? He was closely followed by
Ylia and
Eshmann with
Ylia gaining the lead halfway down the straight,
Pipe kept on the pressure to pull ahead of Ylia to take his first victory.
Ylia came in second with a fast finishing Lawton and Eshman only half a wheel behind.

In A Grade regulars Chris Gartery, Angus Boase and Steve Jeanch away not riding, a number of riders got a sudden promotion to test them selves against club champion Lee Stevens.Craig Spilsbury, Shane Pitt and Peter Fisher went round with Stevens tempering the pace to keep the bunch together. The group stayed as one until the second last lap when Pitt drifted off the back.In the final sprint, Stevens led from the front to take the win.In the race for second Spilsbury just outsprinted Fisher to claim second.
The B grade saw the largest bunch of the night with a number of usual B and C grade riders combining. The wind howled down the hill banishing the thought of a solo break, from a number of riders heads.Despite a few small breaks forming during the race all riders fought hard to keep the group together. In the final sprint Heath Pillen was a marked man with Glen O Brien and Lee Rasheed keen to be on his wheel. In the final sprint Pillen rounded the corner first and started to pull away from a determined Rasheed to claim the win with Rasheed second.O Brien just pipped Peter Schammer at the line for third with Adrian Pipe and Peter Weston rolling in for fifth and sixth.
It was old verses young in the C grade with new rider Luke Gordon determined to beat veteran Gordon Lawton.Under the watchful eye of his Dad, Colin Gordon and experienced riders Angelo Ylia and John Eshmann, Luke gained valuable cycling skills. In the final sprint Lawton rounded the corner first and powered to the line, leaving Luke dream of beating Lawton to wait for another day.Colin Gordon came in third with Eshmann and Ylia rounding out the race.

The Tuesday night criterium series handicapper can be proud of his efforts this week as the finishes in all grades were hotly contested.
A grade saw
Jacob Otto and
Lee Stevens starting behind
Steve Jeanch,
Chris Gartry and
Angus Boase with a more manageable 30 second handicap. The three leaders tried their hardest, but they were eventually reeled in by the
Stevens and
Otto. After all his hard work in the chase Stevens fell away from the bunch to continue a solo ride to the finish.Out in front the pace was fast and furious with an average of 39 being achieved. In the final sprint it was
Chris Gartery and
Jacob Otto in a two horse race for the line with
Gartery leading out from the final corner.
? Otto managed to sneak his nose in front, but only for a moment as
Gartery accelerated to win.
Craig Spilsbury played nice for the first three quarters of the
B grade race, before stamping on the pedals and seeing if he could drop people off the back of the pack.
Glen O Brien was watching him like a hawk and on several occasions the duo managed to break away from
Lee Rasheed,
Shane Pittman and
Peter Schammer. But it was to no avail with the chasing trio reconnecting up the hill.In the final sprint a tactical error by the group allowed
Pittman to get the jump round the final corner.Despite his best efforts
Spilsbury was unable to chase him down and had to settle for second with
Rasheed coming in third leaving
Pittman ecstatic with his win.
C Grade was a much more even group this week with the large grouping of Matt Platt, Colin Gordon, Adrian Pipe, Ruth Strout, Heath Pillen and visiting rider Matt Taylor. The group set a cracking pace easily keeping up with B grade.Matt Platt showed that he will be a force to be reckoned with as he becomes ber, easily the quickest rider on the night. The group worked well tighter all night, but in the final lap it was Platt who took off up the hill forcing Gordon and Pillen to Chase. The places never changed and Platt took his first win with Gordon second and a returning Pillen third.
In a surprise, the gloves came off in the D grade with John Eshmann taking no prisoners as he surged up the hill from the very first lap.? After several unsuccessful attempts Eshmann's persistence paid off and on the fourth lap he blew Angelo Ylia and Gordon Lawton off the back.Eshmann went on with it and was never headed as he rode away to victory. The normally laid back Ylia sprinted away for second leaving Lawton to finish close behind in third.
