Brett Anderson held off the field to win his first trophy race on Sunday, the Mark Manning memorial.

With Mark’s parents Barbara and George and Brother Kym on hand to wave the starters off, 16 riders took to the road in the 40 kilometre event held around Lake Bonney.

Sent out individually Gordon Lawton was off first with Anderson two minutes behind. They were followed at regular intervals by such riders as Angelo Ylia, John Eshmann, Peter Weston, the returning Mick Grey, defending champion Jarrod Benson, Claire Treilibs with Lee Stevens the last to head off 28 minutes after Lawton.

Lawton was the first one caught by Anderson only seven kilometres into the race. Without giving the veteran a chance Anderson surged ahead determined the put as much distance between him and the chasing riders.

Back in the field the riders started to pair up with the usual suspects of Strout and Weston coming together while further back Grey and Benson and Stevens and Boase joined forces.

Benson tried hard to defend his title reaching speeds of up to 45 kph, but it was unsustainable as both he and Travis McKenzie were dropped when they were rounded up by Stevens and Boase.

Lee Stevens was riding with the heart of a lion, laying it all on the road with occasional breathers from Boase. Their teamwork ensured that they caught Grey, Chris Stevens, Treilibs, Weston and Strout halfway out to the turn around point on the second lap.

Stevens rode like a man possessed and dropped Chris Stevens, Simon Woods and Strout on the return leg. Showing great tenacity Weston hung onto the group.

With only two kilometres to go they rushed past Lawton, Eshmann and Ylia and headed for home.

In the final sprint, Stevens refused to yield from the front and was outsprinted by the talented Treilibs with Boase and Stevens next.

However, they all had to satisfied with minor places with a delighted Anderson winning his first ever trophy race in a magnificent solo effort.
