The Riverland Cycling Club held their annual Track Championship race on Sunday the 20th of March. 6 Senior riders and one junior rider nominated to race. Conditions were perfect for racing with minimal wind and comfortable temperatures. This is run as an Omnium style event where points are accrued across all races. The person with the lowest number of points wins the event overall.

After a quick heartstarter the real racing began with a 10 lap scratch race. Colby Jachmann took control of the race and led out early in the sprint to take the win. Lee Stevens came in second, Lee Rasheed third, Dennis Robinson fourth, Angelo Ylia fifth and Frank Sullivan sixth.

Next event was a 500m Time Trial. Jachmann took the win with a blistering time of 40.45 seconds, Stevens was hot on his heels at 41.17 seconds. Dennis Robinson was able to get one back on Rasheed beating him by a slender margin of .08 of a second. Frank Sullivan had the fifth fastest time with Angelo Ylia finishing up this round of racing. Tyler Stevens laid down a time of 58.93 seconds for his first race for the day.

The third event for the day was the Elimination race. Elimination racing is where every lap all riders sprint for the finish line, last rider across the line is eliminated until there are two riders remaining who then compete in a sprint to determine the winner. The first sprint saw Angelo Ylia eliminated, next lap was Frank Sullivans turn to be removed from the race. Dennis Robinson was next to go, lee Rasheed went early in the next sprint but Colby Jachmann wasn’t having him ride away to victory and chased him down. This left Stevens and Jachmann to fight it out for the win with Jachmann being the victor.

Straight after the Elimination was the Flying 200m. Everybody needs to complete the final 200m of a lap in the fastest time possible. Angelo Ylia set the time to beat early with a time of 20.66 seconds. Frank Sullivan soon took the mantle of fastest time with a 16.3 Flying 200m, Lee Rasheed soon cut this time to 15.61 seconds. Dennis Robinson, utilising the power of beetroots, took 0.04 seconds from Rasheeds time. No sooner had Robinson set the fastest time when Stevens flew home in a time of 13.3 seconds with only Jachmann to run. Jachmann cut a further 0.23 seconds from Stevens time to claim the fastest 200m. Tyler Stevens was able to improve on his previous times to set a PB of 20.94 seconds.

Last event for the day was a 3000m Individual Pursuit. Tyler Stevens as a junior was only required to ride a 1500m Individual Pursuit, his time was 3:14.67 minutes. The race of truth was left last to sort the men from the boys. Starting on opposite sides of the track Frank Sullivan and Dennis Robinson raced against each other and the clock. Sullivan set a time of 5:22.76, with Robinsons beetroot power fading he could only manage 5:24.49. The next duel was between Angelo Ylia and Lee Rasheed, Ylia set out hard early to get the early lead. Rasheed could never make up the time to Ylia. Rasheed could only manage the fourth fastest time for the day with 5:14.57. The surprise was Ylia taking the third fastest time for the day, 5:11.92. The last race of the day was the shootout between National silver medallist- Colby Jachmann and State Gold medallist- Lee Stevens. Times were always going to be fast in this event but Jachmann was the fastest with a time of 4:02.06 minutes. Stevens set a time of 4:24.77 minutes.

With racing complete the points were tallied up with Colby Jachmann declared the victor. Lee Stevens claimed the silver medal and Lee Rasheed the Bronze medal. Just missing out on a place was Dennis Robinson. Frank Sullivan and Angelo Ylia were tied for 5th place, with a countback declaring Angelo Ylia was the fifth place relegating Frank Sullivan to sixth place. Tyler Stevens was declared the junior track champion setting some good times for him to beat next year. This race has concluded the 2015/2016 track season.
