Sunday’s race was held at Lyrup on the undulating 11.1km road course. With 9 starters and 3 different distances, it was going to prove a challenge for the handicapper. Sue Lahainer completing 4 laps was first off at the same time as Angelo Ylia, Dennis Robinson, Ruth Strout and Glen O’Brien who were all racing for 5 laps, 2 minutes later, Matt Benson set off with 6 laps ahead of him. Gordon Pipe and Peter Burr racing 5 laps were back another 4 minutes and they were followed by Steve Jaensch a further 4 minutes back with 5 laps. The whole field would start within 9 minutes of each other.
The group of Ylia, Robinson, Strout and O’Brien fractured on lap 3 when Robinson punctured. Strout who is in great form, was too strong for Ylia and O’Brien and she set off in search of the front runners. The duo of Peter Burr and Gordon Pipe worked very well together and would not be seen by Steve Jaensch who chased hard but was unable to reel them in. Benson as strong as always caught Jaensch with half a lap remaining. Sue Lahainer out front would never be troubled and took a strong win ahead of Burr and Pipe. Jaensch pipped Benson on the uphill finish to take 4th with Benson recording 5th and fastest average speed. Strout rode a great race to finish 6th followed by O’Brien and Ylia some 5 minutes adrift. Robinson unfortunately was a DNF after completing 4 laps.
